Everyone’s in search of the perfect cold, crushable summer patio beer. This year, you’ll find it only at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer!
Common Crown Co-Hop Tropical Pale Ale is a joint collaboration between Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits Beer and Calgary’s Common Crown Brewing.
“This is a taste of the tropics in Calgary!” says Damon Moreau, co-founder of Common Crown. “This is a patio crusher for sure. It’s got great hoppy flavour, without any bitterness, and with a lot of tropical fruit and citrus notes. It’s a fruit bomb for sure.”
Co-op Wine Spirits Beer collaborated with Common Crown on Co-Hop previously, after Common Crown reached out, looking for a community-based, locally inspired partnership.
“We had a bunch of the Co-op Wine Spirits Beer staff come out and do some tastings with us to help us refine the beer. Co-op was involved in a lot of the decisions, so this is a true collaboration, and we love working with other local businesses.”
This year there are a few tweaks to Co-Hop, designed to make it tastier—and more eye-catching.
The retro-Hawaiian inspired can may have you thinking of an oceanside getaway, but the artwork on the cans represents river surfers that can be found catching waves on the Bow River. Prominent Calgary landmarks like the Bow Building and Centre Street Bridge make an appearance too. The artwork comes courtesy of Damon’s twin brother, Common Crown co-founder Andrew Moreau.
“We switched up how we handle the hops too this time around because we can’t leave well enough alone,” Moreau jokes. “We kept the same hops, Centennial, Mosaic and Mandarina, but we dry hopped them this time for a bit more aroma and flavour.”
The format is also a little different, having shifted from smaller can six-packs to the larger 4-can tallboys.
“We’re really excited about how this turned out!” says Curt Kotz, Category Manager - Beer at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer. “We just know our customers will love this beer as much as we do as the perfect summer drink. It was really important to us to make something special for our local market and it was a pleasure working with Common Crown on this project.”
