May 18, 2021
However you choose to refer to it—May long, May two-four, Victoria Day weekend—May long weekend is the first official marker of summer. And boy are we ready!
While many of us yearn for those lazy weekends camping with family and friends, or sitting around the fire pit, or picnic table sipping cold drinks and telling stories, there’s still a lot of uncertainty about social interactions. If you’re stuck at home, you’re not alone, but you can certainly make the most of it. This holiday weekend, why not throw a camp-out or cookout in your own yard, on your deck, patio or balcony? And if that coveted outdoor space isn’t yours for the taking, you can still plan a fun camp-out or festive weekend meal in your living room too.
At Home camp-out: The Food
Beer dogs anyone? Fill a large pot with a can or two of beer then boil up hot dogs in the liquid. It lends a nice holiday weekend feel to a basic dog. Just trust us on the extra large pot size, since when the beer first build up it gets really foamy!
At Home Camp-out: The Drinks
Just because you’re not packing up the car doesn't mean you can’t bust out a cooler to store some cold drinks. Park a cooler in the living room or use a solid enclosed laundry basket or storage bin, fill it with ice, and load it with soda, sparkling water, cold beer, and chilled wine.
We love keeping a few patio crusher whites on hand for whenever the mood strikes, and we’re also big advocates for keeping some sparkling wine at the ready. Whether you choose Champagne, Prosecco or Moscato in white or rosé, nothing can set a festive tone like popping a cork.
Half Price Wine!
This is the perfect time to stock up, since at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer you can get wine for half price!
On the May long weekend Co-op has Uvas di Mi Terruno Red and White: Buy a bottle for $7.99 (a $8 savings - on sale May 20-26/21). Stash a couple bottles of white in the cooler for that festive party feel and sip on them all long weekend long.
Cocktail Prep: Keep It Simple
Naturally you can use that ice to shake up some cocktails too. You’ll find Bacardi Spiced Rum, El Dorado 15 year old Rum, and a new lighter calorie product, Baileys Deliciously Light Cream Liquor on special at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer. Use the rum to make refreshing Dark & Stormys with ginger beer for a summer-fresh take on your winter cocktail habits.
Don’t Forget the Beer, dear!
When it comes to the beer, Co-op carries one of the largest selections of local and craft brews in Calgary, in our huge walk in coolers. In fact, from now on, we’re calling it Calgary’s Coolest Beer Room. Come pay us a visit!
Another lineup of beer you’ll find only at Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits Beer is the Ponoka-based Siding 14 Brewing. This brewery’s unique Orange Creamsicle Ale, previously only available in their on-site taproom, is now at Co-op in 6-pack cans.
And finally, if you’re hopeful, like we are, that things will be looking up just in time for the best of the summer season, stock up on beer.
All summer long when you buy two or more Co-op Premium Beer 15-pack cans, you get them for $18.99 each. There are four different 15-packs including Co-op Lager, Light, Pilsner and Variety Pack.
At Home Camp-out: The Accessories
Finally, to bring a long weekend feel to your at-home camp out, break out the tent, and sleeping bags and set them up wherever you have space: backyard or living room. Don’t forget to throw open the windows for some fresh air and start making the most of the summer!
