It's no secret Calgary's craft brewing scene is growing. New breweries and distilleries are opening all the time, and in the quest for better beer, there's much more experimentation going on.
Co-op Wine Spirits beer is a proud supplier and a place you can reliably find an unparalleled selection of local craft beers. Among them, beer from Calgary's Freehold Brewing.
Opened in 2016 by Matt James and Tavis Agnew, Freehold produces two offerings which can be found at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer. Freehold Big Chutes Lager and Lacy Saisy Farmhouse Saison.
Expect sun-ripened barley and hops with a full flavour and crisp, grainy finish in the Big Chutes lager. Freehold has blended traditional hops, known for their earthy flavour and mild bitterness, with new world hops, known for their pungent pine and citrus notes. The result, says Freehold is "a juicy aroma without any perceived bitterness".
When it comes to the Lacy Saisy Farmhouse Saison, there's a "sweet, malty complexity and earthy grounding" alongside "a citrusy, grassy, and floral aroma".
Freehold is a brewery that says it's "Alberta by choice."
"Award-winning beers from all over the world use barley and wheat from Alberta. There's so much to be proud of about Alberta ingredients, that Matt and Tavis thought, why not create beer that uses the world's best?" says Freehold's Jessica Hua.
The brewery is named for the land permits issued in Alberta, and the name "reflects the pioneering spirit of Alberta," according to Hua. The founding duo developed their own pioneering spirit when they left comfortable jobs to break out on their own. Tavis worked in a corporate environment, while Matt spent time working as a Red Seal chef in Vancouver but both were looking for work that was more personally meaningful, more grassroots and community-based.
Freehold has been trying to open up a tasting room and storefront for some time in Calgary, but the team has faced more than a few hurdles, so they say they're grateful that fans can find Freehold beer at many neighbourhood Co-op Wine Spirits Beer locations.
"It's huge for us," enthuses Hua. "We want our beer to be easy to find and this is another channel for us and it makes it so much more accessible."

It’s kind of hard to imagine today, with a computer in every pocket, but back when Canada was still a baby, the railroad was Canada’s lifeline.
When Uncommon Cider set out to make an Alberta-centric cider they knew they wanted to be unique, and keep their focus on western Canadian ingredients.
