Provence Rosé

This romantic region’s pink wines have never been so popular

Why can’t we all live in Provence?! With its inviting Mediterranean waters, lavender scented breezes and lovely wines, it is no wonder Provence is one of the most idyllic places in the world. These days, Provence is the home of rosé, with 88% of its production being dedicated to the pink stuff. And, with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt investing in the area’s wines, it is no wonder that Provence has become synonymous with this style of wine that is pale, rose-coloured, light, dry, and crowd-pleasing.

Rosé sales are booming in Alberta—especially rosés from Provence.  It is almost as though the wines represent the summer vibe and Mediterranean lifestyle. Our favourite bottles born here tend to be light in colour, with soft, easy-drinking textures and fruity flavours. You can expect them to have refreshing notes of watermelon, strawberry and blood orange. Couple those appealing flavours with low-to-moderate alcohol levels and a generous spritz of zippy acidity, and the wines have become a no-brainer for many Albertans seeking something to pair with a sunny day.

A word of caution, however, as bottles of Provence rosé are prone to empty rather quickly once opened; it’s always wise to have an extra bottle (or three!) kicking around. And, if you can track down a 1.5L magnum, then that is even better!

The rosés of Provence are incredibly versatile as well. They pair equally well with lighter foods, as they will with a burger coming off the grill.  Classic pairings would be salmon (prepared nearly any way),  crustaceans, hors d’ouvres and casual nibbles. While they do cozy up nicely to food, they also can be enjoyed all by themselves as an ideal pre-meal sip. Keep rosés in an ice/water bath in between top-ups.

Here at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer, we are always tasting a sea of wine looking for the next great values to offer our customers. Another lovely aspect of the pink wines from southern France is their attractive price points. Below is a selection of our favourite Provence rosés that offer tremendous bang for your buck for the spring and summer of 2019.

Cheers!
