It may not feel like spring is coming yet, but soon enough it’ll be here. While we often associate Rosé wine with the dawning of a new and warmer season, we’re here to say you don’t need to wait. Start sipping a beautiful and crisp Rosé now to get you in the mood for flowers and showers and the summer ahead.
Not yet a Rosé fan? We understand. A lot of bad pink wine in the 1980s and 90s can be thanked for giving Rosé a bad rap (we’re looking at YOU, White Zinfandel!).
Rosé used to be known as a wine for people who didn’t really like wine because it was very sweet and easy to find inexpensively. Plus, it looked like sweet soda or a cooler, so for younger palettes, it seemed appealing.
Now, Rosé is part of the portfolio of drinks to know about, and there is a wide variety of producers, tastes, tones, and notes.
Why the resurgence of Rosé? Maybe it’s because millennials have shown interest in it, while others point to improved production processes and more balanced flavours thanks to producers taking Rosé’s appeal more seriously.
The truth is, there’s a lot of misinformation about Rosé. Let’s dig in on some of those false ideas and what the real story is.
Rosé Myth: Rosé is Made by Blending Red and White Wine
Some people think Rosé is a mix of red and white wine, but no. There is a unique science to the making of Rosé. Different producers of Rosé actually have different methods of achieving the pink color. The most common is called limited grape skin maceration, which essentially means leaving the red skins of the grapes in contact with the wine for a short period of time.
Rosé Myth: All Rosé is Sweet
Let’s blame White Zinfandel for getting us all started on Rosé, then summarily ruining it for us for two decades. White Zinfandel is infamously sweet, but not all Rosé is White Zinfandel and not all Rosé is the same. Some have a fruiter flavor, while others are tangier, crisper and drier. Explore different brands of Rosé and Rosé imported from different countries to truly experience its wide variety.

Rosé Myth: Rose is a Girly Wine
This is a complete stereotype–linked to the stereotype that pink is for girls. Anyone can enjoy Rosé wine, no matter your gender and both men and women do love it. In fact, some of the finest male sommelliers and wine experts are huge fans of Rosé, because it’s a darn fine wine. If you get any flack for serving it, just say, “Aren’t you man enough to drink pink?”
Rosé Myth: Rosé Must be Made from Specific Grapes
Rosé can be made from almost any red grapes, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Syrah.
Rosé Myth: Rosé is a Summer-only Wine
Says who? People often enjoy Rosé in the summer because of the image promoted in movies and TV shows (like Big Little Lies and Dead to Me), where the characters are drinking a glass out on the balcony or in the garden. But nothing is stopping you from enjoying Rosé any time of year. (Truthfully, nothing beats the mid-winter blahs like a cool glass of rose by the fire!)
Rosé Myth: Rose Doesn’t Pair Well with Food
If you haven’t tried it yet, try pairing Rosé with a lot of the foods you would pair with drier white wines, like Pinot Grigio. Some foods that pair well with Rosé include light salads, pasta, rice dishes, seafood, shellfish, and goat cheese. But you can also serve it with meat dishes too.
