Spirits of British Columbia

June 29, 2017

As the end of our journey exploring Canada’s bounty of alcoholic beverages draws near, we want to go out with a splash. So let’s look at some special red and white Canada Day recipes using liquor from BC. We have scoured our shelves for selections that will please any gathering, no matter how diverse.

june29Let’s begin with a classic red beverage invented in Calgary — make a Caesar using Sons of Vancouver Chili Vodka. At 180,000 on the scoville scale (a measurement of spicy heat) from local aquaponic chilies, it will definitely add some spark to your Canada Day celebrations.

2 oz. Sons of Vancouver Chili Vodka
Clamato Juice or Tomato Juice
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
2 dashes Tabasco
Lime Wedges
Black Pepper
Celery Salt
Ice

For another red, and a nod to Canada’s rugged past, the BC Berry Puck using premium whisky from McLoughlin & Steeleto. Blended and bottled in the Okanagan, it is Western Canada’s first premium craft distillery. Named for Dr. John McLoughlin (Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company and first manager of Fort Vancouver) & James Steele (pioneer & ranchman).

1½ oz. McLoughlin & Steele Whisky
½ oz. Fresh Lime Juice
2 tsp. BC Berry Jam
3 oz. Ginger Ale
Lime wheel, for garnish

For something white, try a Cosmo with Stump Coastal Forest Gin from Victoria, crafted using hand-foraged herbs and unique botanicals grown in BC.

1 oz. Stump Coastal Forest Gin
½ oz. Triple Sec
3 oz. Ocean Spray White Cranberry Juice

Our next white option has endless possibilities – a Spritzer using BC wine. Simply choose one of our many BC favourites, and you a have a refreshing choice perfect for summer celebrations.

3 oz. aromatic white wine (such as sauvignon blanc, riesling, or gewürztraminer)
1 oz. club soda
dash of orange or lemon bitters
1 Orange or lemon twist

It’s been a delicious journey. With the thousands of options at Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits and Beer, it does not have to end. Come explore our extensive collection yourself.
