January 23, 2020
As those holiday bills start rolling in, many of us are feeling like a thrifty January is a smart way to go. What if we told you there's a way to keep drinking those celebratory-feeling wines, without the festive price tag?
Meet The Social Collection. The Social Collection is a Co-op Wine Spirits Beer exclusive. Social Collection wines are chosen by a panel of Co-op sommeliers, and everyday wine lovers and they're made available to you at an outstanding value.
What is The Social Collection?
Co-op Wine Spirits Beer works directly with wineries to sample some of their best wines of the year. Our panel chooses the absolute best tasting wines that are also the best bang for your buck. They're bottled under Co-op Wine Spirits Beer's Social Collection label, and then brought to Calgary and offered exclusively to Co-op Wine Spirits Beer customers.
New for 2020: Bin 118 Pinot Noir and Bin 117 Provence Rose
After sampling dozens of wines from regions across the globe, the Co-op judging panel chose a rich California Pinot Noir and a decadent French Rosé for Social Collection's newest vintages: Bin 118 Pinot Noir and Bin 117 Provence Rosé.
"The wines we're bringing in under our private Social Collection label are truly outstanding wines," says Lana Turner, Wine Manager at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer. "These aren't bin ends or leftovers. These are some of the best wines from prestigious producers all over the world."
Social Collection Bin 118 Pinot Noir by Schug Winery
With one hundred years of winemaking heritage in both Germany and California, Schug Winery has been making amazing wines since 1980. Founded by Walter Schug, the winery is still family owned and operated, now by second-generation winemakers Axel and Claudia Schug.
The Schug family has been pioneering great wines for over four decades, and in recent years has been focusing on sustainable farming, making choices that mean the wines are vegan-friendly, and the winery is now fully solar powered.
The Social Collection Bin 118 Pinot Noir is a beautifully balanced wine with just the right acidity, and ripe fruit flavours like cherry, strawberry and hints of spice.
Watch for Social Collection Bin 118 Pinot Noir by Schug Winery coming early February to your local Co-op Wine Spirits Beer store.
Social Collection Bin 117 Provence Rosé by Racine Wines
Our Social Collection Rosé selection hails from Racine Wines, and this one in particular is made by Bruno Lafon whose brother is the well-known wine maker Dominique Lafon from Comte Lafon in Burgundy, France.
With its delicate blush hue, you could call this wine an early summer vacation in a glass. A wonderful foil for some winter's roasted white meats like chicken, pork or seared salmon or fish, Social Collection Bin 117 is the Rosé you need in your fridge now.
This wine is elegant, refined and well-balanced, and is exclusive to Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits beer all the way from the south of France. This rich and impressive blend is the perfect option to bridge the gap between red and white as we transition back towards spring.
"The great things about the Social Collection wines is that they offer our customers the opportunity to try some new wines at great prices. If you find one you like, you should snap it up, since in some cases, this is a one-time vintage," Turner shares. "We really wanted a unique and special opportunity for Co-op members to get access to some of the best wines in the world."
Turner says the special panel of Co-op wine tasters routinely tries dozens of wines, submitted by some of the world's top winemakers. They score the wines to find not only the best tasting ones, but also the ones that are the dark horses when it comes to value and price.
"We taste all the wines blind. We don't know which wineries have submitted juice for us. This process allows us to focus on what's in the glass. In many cases the wines we choose we are so lucky to get," according to Turner. "The Social Collection wines often sell out—they go like hotcakes, which we love to hear. We're just so proud of these wines so we're glad customers love them as much as we do.
