A good cocktail is the perfect way to celebrate any holiday and with our nations 150th birthday upon us, I've combed the country for some of the best Canadian inspired party drinks.
Here are 4 great Canadian cocktails to enjoy over the July long weekend—or any day this summer!
Cowtown Old Fashioned
I’m kicking off the top 4 with this tasty drink in honour of my hometown of Calgary. Created by the manger of UVA Wine & Cocktail bar, this drink uses a healthy dose of Alberta rye and Vancouver bitters.
2 oz Alberta Premium 'Dark Horse' rye whisky
1/2 oz Mace & Nutmeg Syrup (see below)
2 drops Bittered Sling Plum & Root beer bitters
-Stir all ingredients gently with ice for 10 to 15 seconds.
-Strain into an old fashioned glass with a large ice cube, and garnish with a lemon slice.
Mace & Nutmeg syrup (1 L):
600 g white sugar
600 g water
10 g nutmeg, toasted and crushed
10 g mace, toasted
-Toast spices in a medium saucepan until you can “smell” them (about two minutes).
-Remove from heat. Crush them with a mortar and pestle. Meanwhile, bring the sugar and water to a low simmer.
-Add the mace and nutmeg, and remove from heat. Allow to steep for 12 hours at room temperature.
-Strain the spices out, and bottle in a clean, sanitized container for seven to 10 days while refrigerated.
Garden Party Gin & Tonic
This is a true original, created by spirits expert Chris Sikorsky. Chris is the manager of Co-op's World of Whisky store in downtown Calgary. Not only do they sell a vast selection of whisky, but they also carry all types of Canadian spirits and bitters. Bitters can be added to any drink to create a herbal, fruity or earthy layer to the cocktail.
1.5 oz Cirka dry gin (Montreal)
2 drops Black Cloud Garden Party bitters (Alberta)
3/4 oz 3X4 Ginger Ale syrup (Montreal)
3 oz Sparkling water
Add all ingredients to a glass with ice, stir gentle and enjoy.
As Canadians we love anything maple, so the perfect way to celebrate our Canadian heritage is with a maple-inspired cocktail. Here is a simple recipe that features a whisky out of Concord, Ontario that is made out of 100% Canadian grown rye.
2 oz Stock and Barrel single malt whisky
5 oz Canadian maple syrup
2 drops of Bittered Sling Suius Cherry bitters
-In a mixing glass filled with ice, add the whisky, maple syrup and two drops of Bittered Sling Suius Cherry bitters.
-Stir for one minute and strain into a rocks glass with a few large ice cubes.
-Garnish with a cinnamon stick rubbed around the inside rim of the glass three to four times and then dropped in.
The Canadian Rock Shot
This scrumptious Canadian shot, inspired by our love for hockey and curling, is sure to get your Canada celebrations started!
1 part Iceberg Vodka (Newfoundland)
1 part peach schnapps
1 part Jagermeister
1 part cranberry juice
Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into shot glasses and serve.
