Throwing a western-style BBQ to make up for the cancellation of the greatest outdoor show in Calgary? You need just the right cold drinks to pour alongside all that grilled goodness. Here’s our recommendation for how to keep your cooler and bar fridge stocked this summer.

“Burgers in general will do just great with just about any red wine,” Roberts recommends, “But let’s elevate the game a bit by pairing for each of these new burger flavours you might be seeing when you’re shopping for groceries.”
What to Drink with a Tangy Horseradish Burger
“Always pair to the most dominant flavour and here it is clearly the horseradish—and potentially some mustard,” advises Roberts. “The spicy notes of the horseradish will make any wine seem drier, more bitter and potentially more alcoholic. I would make sure my wine had a good fruity backbone. A California Zinfandel or Monastrell from Spain would be soft, plump and not too tart here.”
Try Cline Old Vine Zinfandel for a fruity, peppery style or Montgo Monastrell for a more full bodied and intense pairing.
What to Sip with Sirloin Burgers
Since this is a burger lovers burger, Roberts recommends pairing to the prime quality meat that is on offer.
“A juicy, earthy Pinot Noir would be fitting here or even a dry style Rosé from Provence.”

“Both would be banging burger buddies!” enthuses Roberts.
Pairings with Prime Rib Burgers
Prime Rib is known for its fat content, providing tenderness, flavour and moisture. Robert’s pick for a rich prime rib burger is a wine with a little more acidity.
“I’d be leaning towards something Italian or French here. A juicy Côtes du Rhone like Celliers Des Dauphins has some good intensity with a little astringency and acidity to go up against that big burger. If Tuscany is more your style, the Tolaini Al Passo Toscana is a big, bold and mouth puckering red that will compliment perfectly.”
Wine Picks for a Steak Spice Burger
Steak spice burgers take the tasty shake that normally goes on a steak, and adds it to the burger, making for a tangy, tasty umami essence to the meat. Again,Roberts recommends pairing for the strongest flavour, the steak spice, which is savoury, salty, and brings some heat.
“Let’s get into something rich, opulent and fully flavoured!” says Roberts. “The Troublemaker is a big, purple, mouth-filling and mouth-staining red that can hang out on your patio in the sun. La Storia Petite Syrah is another brooding bad boy for the premium wine lover.”
