This week, Canadians will celebrate the 150th anniversary of our dominion formation, when the country established its confederation in 1867.
Although this is a significant event, we should rejoice and give thanks every day for living in the greatest country in the world, filled with freedom and choices.
For some, favourite drinks will factor in the celebrations and from the east coast to the west coast, there are some incredible makers of wines, spirits and beers.
From commercial producers as old as the country itself, to recent start-ups in craft operations, there are many product options available to raise a glass for Canada.
In the spirits category, and near the shores of Vancouver Island is Victoria Distillers, one of Canada’s oldest small batch quality distilleries. Premium Oaken Gin, is aged in oak, and provides an amber color and rich flavor, which was recognized with a Double Gold award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2016.
British Columbia is a vibrant contributor of fantastic wines and surrounding the shores of Lake Okanagan are Canadian vintners of distinction. One of my favourites is Dirty Laundry Vineyards. With wines that are as rich in taste as the namesake’s history, you will be pleased with the Merlot and Riesling, among many varietals.
There are some amazing micro-breweries across the province, and while all are worthy of mention, in focus is the Hoyne Brewing Company, on Bridge Street in Victoria. Entrepreneur and brewmaster Sean Hoyne defines “craft beer”, and foundational to his philosophy is “make great beer, the rest will follow”. For the love of Pilsner, which is a lager made with Saaz hops, make sure to try the appropriately named “Hoyner Pilsner”.
All products listed, and a vast selection of others, are available at Co-op Wine Spirits Beer. Please drink responsibly.
