Wines for Summer

July 17, 2018

Summer is in full swing and patios, terraces, and backyards are the entertainment venue of choice. While you’re indulging in seasonal favourites like succulent seafood, fresh grilled Alberta beef, mouthwatering salads, and berry and stone fruit desserts, think about the ideal wine pairings that can go alongside them.

Summer is the perfect time for fresh and light wines, like whites and rosés. Here are some standout summer wines to pair with your next outdoor lunch or a nice evening under the stars.

play estatePlay Estate Winery
Nestled in the rolling scenery of BC’s Okanagan region, Play Estate Winery is home to a 14 acre vineyard, as well as a wine shop, tasting room, and bistro. The winery crafts thoughtful varietals, with a stunning collection of flavours.

Look for the Play Estate Dramatic White. You’ll get hints of lemon and BC stone fruit on the initial nose then enjoy the tastes of honeydew melon and green fruits. A perfectly crisp summer option.

Can’t give up those reds, even in the summer heat? Play’s Dramatic Red is a sublime option. With elements of toasted wood, tobacco, chocolate and red fruits this medium bodied wine is perfect with those summer BBQ dishes.

social collection pinot rose2Social Collection by Castoro de Oro
Castoro de Oro is a family-owned winery set along the famed Golden Mile in the Okanagan. Its award-winning wines are hand-crafted with 100% Canadian grapes. Castoro de Oro was selected by The Social wine co-operative to produce three different wines for them.  Look for Social Collection Bin 108 and 109 in particular this summer, since they’re ultra light and easy drinking.

Social Collection Bin 108 is a Pinot Rosé. A more complex option among the Rosés, Bin 108 offers hints of sweet cherry. The color is also a show-stopper, with a beautiful, bright cherry hue.

For a more unique summer option, opt for Social Collection Bin 109 White Gold. Blending just the right amount of Pinot Blanc, Vidal, Siegfried, and Viognier grapes, Bin 109 is a crowd pleaser. Expect a drier wine with a fruity aroma and a full, lingering finish. Serve it alongside seafood or Asian fusion dishes.

You can also try Social Collection Bin 116 Pinot Noir, that the winery calls, “persistent, insistent and confident.” This full-of-flavour red has hits of cherry, and strawberry, alongside earthy soot and sage. Sip it on your deck under the setting sun, and enjoy the wonderful lightness and smooth mouthfeel.

kim crawfordKim Crawford Rosé
Kim Crawford wines are made far from those BC vineyards, in the temperate New Zealand climate. Most of the wineries there are located on the coast, which allows grapes to ripen slowly, building their flavor intensity.

If you’re looking for a fragrant, delicious and pretty Rosé for your next summer pairing, then Kim Crawford Rosé is an outstanding and popular choice. The wine will start to impress you with its stunning subtle color. The aroma is enticing with summer berries and tropical fruit. Pair it with light summer foods or enjoy on its own with finger-foods.

For a truly dry and crisp white, with intoxicating hints of tropical fruit, try the Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a classic option from the famed New Zealand Marlborough region and goes perfectly with fresh seafood or crisp summer salads.
