What's in My Glass

Karen Crippen

Chapoutier Bila Haut Blanc

This month we are exploring a wine that comes from southern France in an area called Cotes Du Roussillon. Cotes refers to the hills that make up the landscape of this region, located at the eastern edge of the Pyrenees Mountains near the border with Spain. This Mediterranean climate region is the sunniest of all French wine regions and is dominated by red grape varieties. Even so, the white wines that are produced (from a combination of French and Spanish varieties) are outstanding with both French and Spanish-style food. What makes this wine interesting is the blend of four grapes, (Grenache blanc 50%, Marsanne 20%, Macabeu 20%, Roussanne 10%) and together they create a food-friendly wine with weight. You'll notice characteristics of stone fruit, and honeysuckle balanced with a fresh acidity that is the result of high altitude plantings. This wine is sure to be a hit on a warm day for just sipping, or enjoy it with a meal. The weighty style of this French white provides a wide range of pairing options from white meats to creamy casseroles. We recommend turning on the grill and enjoying a glass with Mediterranean style seafood, shellfish or with chicken dishes such as coq au vin.
